Summer Suits

Our blissful countryside break came to an abrupt end when we stepped off the bus at Shandwick Place and straight into the city centre lunch rush.  Black-suited businessmen trotted importantly from office to restaurant, speedily over-taking one another, pushing clammy hair out of red puffed faces.  While not the hottest day this week, the wool-clad office boys nevertheless looked out of place next to the summer prints and loose linens of West End shoppers.  I felt sorry for the sweltering office boys, suddenly thrust from black-suit habitat onto hot city street.

For suits which comfortably crossover from boardroom to cafe culture think Italian and choose a suit which is lightweight and well cut.   My boyfriend owns only one suit.  Its pale grey fabric and slim 1960s tailoring mean he looks sharp no matter if it’s warm or cool outside.  He bought it last summer for about £130 in Topman, where you can still find a good range of suits for under £200.

For effortless style stick to simple design and don’t be afraid of losing your socks or rolling up sleeves.  Try ditching your jacket for the summer to give waistcoats (and underarms) an airing instead.  And most importantly lads, take your time and enjoy the sunshine while it lasts!
